			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Få ting er så motiverende, opildnende og radikaliserende som eskatologiske forestillinger; tanker om den sidste tid, om utopier, hvad enten idealet er det kommunistiske samfund, det klasseløse samfund, det forureningsløse samfund, det helt frie samfund, videnssamfundet, det kønsløse samfund og mange af de andre samfund, der er blevet udtænkt i tidernes løb og har drevet mennesker til alt fra ejendommeligheder til de mest ubeskrivelige rædsler i det tyvende århundredes &#8216;ismer.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Venstreutopismen</em>&#8221; er et forholdsvist veldokumenteret fænomen; det fremhæves endda positivt om venstrefløjspolitikere, at de &#8220;tør forestille sig en bedre verden&#8221;, &#8220;tænker uden for de givne rammer&#8221;, etc. [Jeg opfatter imidlertid den slags som det glade, Dædaliske vanvid, men det er vist ingen overraskelse]. <a href="http://traditionochfason.wordpress.com/2009/07/03/utopierna-i-perspektiv/" target="_blank">Tobias Harding har i sin gæstekronik i <em>Tradition och Fason </em>skrevet om netop disse tanker, men også reaktionære og romantiske forestillinger om en ideel, førindustriel fortid [in casu: Herredet]. </a></p>
<p>Det samme gør sig gældende for religiøs eskatologi og utopisme &#8212; som har udtryksformer fra Amish-folkets forsøg på at skabe et religiøst frirum til wahhabismens forsøg på at genskabe en renere Islam i politisk skikkelse. Også vanvittigt interessant: F.eks. hvordan medlemmerne af <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven%27s_Gate_%28religious_group%29"><em>Heaven&#8217;s Gate</em></a> følte sig nødsaget til kollektivt selvmord for at kunne undslippe jorden (jordelivet, den uperfekte verden) for at stige ombord deres flugtvej ud (til det overjordiske), kometen Haley-Bopp. Implikationen er klar &#8212; hvis man kan syne enden, betyder det nuværende pludseligt meget mindre. Man kender det måske fra feriedage, hvor de sidste udenlandske penge lige skal fyres af inden, man tager hjem, fordi man ved, at man ikke vil kunne bruge pengene ellers. <em>Det er nu eller aldrig.</em></p>
<p>Netop følelsen af <em>nu eller aldrig </em>er det samme, der historisk set har drevet megen konservativ radikalisme / radikalkonservatisme, men relationen til <em>dystopien </em>er for mig at se for dårligt beskrevet. Hvis en bolsjevik kan drives til radikal, udenomsparlamentarisk handling ud fra ønsket om snarest muligt at indfri et ønske om utopi, så kan en konservativ drives til den grimmeste reaktion ud fra ønsket om for en hver pris at undgå dystopiens virkeliggørelse.</p>
<p>Når jeg skriver dette, er det måske i et udtryk for ængstelse ved implikationerne af en dystopisk opfattelse af Vestens tilstand; jeg hørte i tirsdags Claus Thomas Nielsens tale til Tidehvervs sommermøde, hvor han opridsede Anders Fogh Rasmussens regeringstid. Kritikken var hård, udsigterne dystre &#8212; og over for det tilsyneladende håbløse er der kun to muligheder: resignation eller radikalisering. <em>&#8220;Der må gøres noget&#8221; </em>og<em> &#8220;hvad kan det nytte</em>&#8220;.</p>
<p>Men der må være et alternativ: Måske vil det at erkende det uundgåelige kun fremskynde det? Vestens undergang, eller Aftenlandets, er måske et eksistentielt vilkår for os i vor tid, for alle os efter katastrofeåret 1914. Den demokratiske konservatismes forsvar for vestlig civilisation må bygge på det bedste, vi kan mønstre. At hengive sig til radikalisme og reaktion er faneflugt, og idealet må at være som Asbjørn, som vi kender fra Sjørupstenen: <em>Han flygtede ikke ved Uppsala; men kæmpede så længe han havde våben. </em></p>
<p>Det må være vores tålelige &#8212; måske nødvendige &#8212; idealisme, som også drev spartanerne til at holde stand ved Thermopolyæ imod en overvældende overmagt i den persiske hær. Spørgsmålet er ikke, om det nytter &#8212; spørgsmålet er, om det er den konservative i nutiden eller fremtidens historieskrivere, der skal afgøre det. Nok døde Asbjørn, men han flygtede ikke, og mindet om hans heltedåd (uanset, hvad den var) lever videre til inspiration for fremtidige slægtled</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;"><span>SPØRGSMÅLET, om oldsprogene skal være obligatoriske for teologistudiet, handler om mere end blot studieordninger. Spørgsmålet er, om teologien skal leve op til sin arv og bibeholde vores kulturs bånd til oldtiden eller lade dem kappe i poppens navn.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">Teologien er som en af de ældste bestående videnstraditioner, vi har ikke blot her i landet, men i hele Europa. Med dens tusindårige rødder til de romerske, græske og jødiske kulturkredse udgør den også et af de få overlevende bånd, vi overhoved har, til oldtidens menneskehed. Den overlevering af kristendommen som en klassisk arv udgør i sig selv en af de bærende bjælker i europæisk civilisation. Ikke vag snak om demokrati og C02, men mennesker af kød og blod, der gennem mange års studier, arbejde, flid, indsats, har været i stand til at holde gang i et bål, der foreløbig har brændt i to tusinde år.<span> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">Den tradition har betydning. Alternativet er glemsel, rodløshed, fortabelse.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">Men i disse moderne pædagogiske tider opfattes oldtidens menneskers sprog tilsyneladende som uvedkommende, som ”oldævl”, siden man ikke finder det nødvendigt for fremtidens teologer at lære dem. Den debat om teologistudiets indhold, der har verseret i de seneste uger, har navnlig omhandlet behovet for at tiltrække nye studerende (eller ikke skræmme dem bort), stillet over for behovet for at værne om den teologiske faglighed.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">Kristendommens centrale betydning for vores kultur fremhæves ofte i politiske og værdimæssige debatter – ikke mindst i borgerlige og kristeligt funderede kredse. Eksempelvis anbefalede nærværende avis anbefalede for få år siden, at kristendommen blev skrevet ind i den europæiske forfatningstraktat. Synspunktet må vel også antages at deles af de teologer, der ikke bestrider præsteembeder. Nu har vi hørt folk tale om kristen civilisation – men er det ment alvorligt?</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;">Som udefrakommende – jeg er hverken teolog eller menighedsrådsmedlem – må jeg også fremhæve, at teologerne er blandt de eneste, der fører faklen videre fra oldtiden i kraft af deres umiddelbare adgang til kilderne. Videreførelsen af vores kultur, som teologien som fag må have til formål, kan ikke lykkes, hvis man i håbet om at tiltrække flere studerende hælder barnet ud med badevandet.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:left;"><span>Hvis det er ens alvor, at kristendommen og den kristne kulturarv faktisk har betydning for dansk og europæisk kultur – og, at teologien således er et fag med en bredere relevans end blot at uddanne servicemedarbejdere for de få overlevende kirkegængere – så må ævlet om at afskaffe sprogstudierne lægges på hylden, og man må i stedet hylde oldsprogene.</span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>I recently discovered the late author and conversationalist William F. Buckley, Jr. (1925-2008). Unfortunately a few months too late. Belated interest is a terrible burden of youth &#8211; by the time we young people come to our senses about any particular issue, all the important things have been said and, even worse, all the important people who said those very things have died. In any case, YouTube let me see Buckley in action without having to wait for some network to publish a retrospective.</p>

<p>What a character! His demeanor and eloquence instantly impressed me; especially in the light of an ongoing discussion I have had about the virtues of American vs. British English. Often, and not only in Europe, American English is considered second-rate and scoffed at as uncultivated. While this is the case at times, It most definitely does not have to be the case. Perhaps Buckley is a bad example &#8211; his English was without a doubt extremely idiosyncratic. I read a number of obituaries about him that variously described it as &#8220;patrician&#8221;,  as an &#8220;aristocratic drawl&#8221; &#8220;preposterously mellifluous&#8221; or even &#8220;Shakespearean&#8221;. Mellifluous, sweet and flowing, drawing and pulling the words like a confectioner would handle a hot candy mass, is a spot-on description. I have always admired well-spoken Southern accents, and while Buckley&#8217;s was not purely Southern, his parents&#8217; drawl left an unmistakable touch on his diction and prosody. <em><strong>Slate </strong></em>has a very interesting discussion of his way of speaking <a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2185368/">here.</a></p>
<p>I have spent a few hours today and yesterway watching Buckley&#8217;s various interviews, speeches and conversations alone and with notables like Gore Vidal and Noam Chomsky. I especially liked his TV-debate with Vidal from the late 60s &#8211; Buckley with his &#8220;aristocratic drawl&#8221; becomes even more wonderful to watch when juxtaposed with Vidal&#8217;s formal, deeply neutral almost newsreader-like Standard American style. I actually like both styles; they each give their own distinct impressions of the speaker as mostly well-bred or well-trained. The newsreaders of the hey-day had gloriously razor-sharp articulation, but a rather dull and scientistic phrasing &#8211; I almost have to mention Hugo Weaver&#8217;s rendering of Agent Smith in <em>the</em> <em>Matrix </em>as a modern example of this style.</p>
<p>As for my self, I am not quite sure how best to characterize my English. My father is from Montana, and my mother speaks an English that to most Americans is impossible to pinpoint regionally. Sometimes people guess Canada, but it is in fact more the product of many different regional influences.  I consider my own English rather standard, (i.e. close to General American), though I am ever-mindful of a Scandinavian influence &#8211; ten years of residence must somehow have left a touch. I am not up to date with slang and popular phrases in the US, which I suppose reveals me as somewhat of a foreigner in that regard. But I do try to speak properly &#8211; by not saying &#8220;<em>try</em> <em>and speak..&#8221;</em>, for instance. But it is without a doubt difficult to maintain a clear pronunciation. I might be overly sensitive to the whole issue.</p>
<p>Maybe a linguist or English teacher can tell me something about my dialect. I had my last stay in the US in Up-State NY in Clifton Park. I came there from Puerto Rico and then Denmark, then went to Norway and Denmark. I have never had voice training, and I&#8217;d be glad to supply a reading sample, such as the <a href="http://ewpaisley.net/ny-mappe/Stellatext.mp3">Stella text</a> (press for .mp3).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p style="margin-bottom:0;">A couple of weeks ago, I read Carl Schmitt&#8217;s <em>Concept of the Political </em><span style="font-style:normal;"> in a Danish translation, &#8216;Det politiskes begreb&#8217;. I had originally fallen upon Schmitt in high school, where I had written a paper called Brevis Tractatus de Bacchanalibus (A Brief Treaty on the Bacchanals) as my &#8216;larger written asignment&#8217;, a mini-thesis that high school students write in one of their major fields – in my case Latin. I had discussed, in Structuralist terms, how Roman historiography painted a picture an exotic, essentially inimical Other  &#8211; the Bacchanals – which was entirely un-Roman, un-civilized and intolerable, and ultimately destroyed. Not exactly very refined work, or rather, not all that original, but it </span><em>was</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> my third year of high school. In any case, the state of exception came into my sights at this point – via Giorgio Agambens &#8216;homo sacer&#8217; (cf. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_sacer" target="_blank">Wikipedia article on this</a>). I haven&#8217;t since read any Agamben, except for (numerous) second hand references in various articles on violence and the state of exception. The last text I believe was about violence and bands of young males in Liberia. In any case, I was led from Roman history to Carl Schmitt, a truly fascinating author.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span id="more-119"></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">He&#8217;s rightly described as the Hobbes of the 20</span><sup><span style="font-style:normal;">th</span></sup><span style="font-style:normal;"> century. Controversial, combative, uncompromising and rather infamous for being the &#8216;Crown Jurist&#8217; of the Third Reich. The questions of whether his theories are admissible or damned by association with the NSDAP is– to paraphrase Schmitt himself – “to me so uninteresting that I do not want to talk about that at all.“</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">I began my Schmitt studies with </span><em>The Concept of the Political, </em><span style="font-style:normal;">which is a challenging little book. Regarding crime and punishment, I find the difference he points out between the </span><em>hostis </em><span style="font-style:normal;">and </span><em>inimicus </em><span style="font-style:normal;">fascinating and most definitely useful – </span><em>Hostis </em><span style="font-style:normal;">is the public, external foe that is battled in war, while </span><em>inimicus </em><span style="font-style:normal;">is the private, personal enemy*. One&#8217;s relationship to one&#8217;s foe need not be personally hostile – it can simply be be an acceptance of the act that a state of war, of belligerency, exists between to two parties or that there is nothing to hinder the rapid emergence of such a state.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">I have spoken about internal and external threats before in this blog and elsewhere, and I think the <em>hostis/inimicus</em>-distinction addresses is excellently. While the criminal most definitely is odious and despicable, and despite the rhetorical &#8216;war on crime&#8217;,  we cannot say that there is a state of war between the state and criminals. Except for the most extreme cases (which I will be discussing briefly), we do not destroy criminals and generally acknowledge their humanity and that they are part of society. The enormous devotion we put into rehabilitating criminals – reforming, reshaping them into a tolerable form- in order for us to keep them among us – bears witness to that. This thought interests me.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">A crime is committed </span><em>or </em><span style="font-style:normal;">an attack takes place; the criminal is neutralized punished </span><em>or </em><span style="font-style:normal;">the attacker is destroyed; order is restored </span><em>or </em><span style="font-style:normal;">safety is restored. On the one hand, the State is violated (since breaking the law is not only a private offense, but also an affront on its authority to establish laws in the first place) and naturally, it must react – it identifies the offender, neutralizes him, punishes him, takes step to ensure future compliance; on the other hand, it then forgives. Whether is forgets is separate matter. This outline is largely in line with the theory of restorative justice, to which partly I adhere. There is a transgression of the normal rule – that </span><em>we, in our group, are on the same team</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> – which precludes harm, deception and so on inside of it – but also, notably, a realization <em>that there are wolves among the sheep</em>; that there is some one inside the group who has behaved in the same way as an external foe.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">The hostile behavior, the anti-social (which is a glorious term for a number of reasons) is acknowledged and must be dealt with somehow. Typically, classically and historically, we have responded with aggression – violent punishment </span><em>or</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> expulsion from the group as a lawless non-citizens. A </span><em>homo sacer.</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> Doing so is the non-idealistic response of a beleaguered society with an unstable boundary and internal workings, such as the Norse. It reclassifies the citizens – the social man who can be trusted (&#8230; and trusted to abide by the rules) – into a foe who cannot be trusted to be orderly and peaceable &#8211; based on hostile behavior. This is simple and logical. Hostile behavior marks the </span><em>hostis –</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> which warrants any and all defensive (re-)action.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">In this light, imposing punishment can be seen as a a way of dealing with this blind and harsh conclusion in a way that will satisfy the logical need for the community to mark its boundaries and demonstrate its power and capability to respond to threats, but without drawing the boundary so sharply that it, in a pun, ends up lacerating us all, as summary executions or banishments would. The friend/foe-distinction is definitely primary here; the private enemy or &#8216;criminal&#8217; is a derived concept. This I may even point out historically, as we gradually see more and more fine-grained (less black-and-white) definitions of criminals and threats – terrorists, traitors, anti-social people, criminals – while still retaining the original dichotomy of friend or foe. The government prosecutes and punishes domestic enemies on the same authority as it attacks or fends off foreign foes.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">In this light, punishment is merciful. Perhaps it&#8217;s merely practical, but to the offender there is a certain mercy in not being exterminated or expelled from society. On the other hand, we solve the problem of the &#8216;friend&#8217; – the citizen, compatriot, etc – acting hostilely (i.e. in the manner of a </span><em>hostis</em><span style="font-style:normal;">) – by countering the initial reaction with its dialectal opposite – social obligations – which are antithetical to hostility. We speak of &#8216;debt to society&#8217; –debt is, of course, a social obligation. The anti-social action – crime – can thus be translated into conferring </span><em>greater</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> social obligations and bringing the offender </span><em>closer</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> or </span><em>deeper</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> into society, while our simpler instincts –  aggressive and  territorial as always –  urge us to expel and destroy. To use Hegelian terms, which I have already hinted at, we have a established a thesis – Expel/destroy; an antithesis contain/treat, and are at the time being awaiting the corrective synthesis. Future thinkers will have to resolve the issue.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">I however pose some questions that I consider necessary in the light of this problem – our foes among friends. I have, e.g., fully legitimized treating immigrant criminals as hostiles, as enemies. This is problematic, but perhaps necessary, since it can lead to more interesting approaches to  criminal justice as we apply it to foreigners. Punishment is, to continue my line of reasoning, akin to integration: The criminal </span><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">alien</span></span><span style="font-style:normal;">ates himself from society, is corrected and brought back in to the mainstream (though, on the other hand, we all know of the marginalization they experience, since – of course I would say – they are thrown further into the margins of the &#8216;friend&#8217; category with every criminal act and risk their lives and safety by approaching – with every hostile act – being recategorized as </span><em>hostes</em><span style="font-style:normal;">). The foreigner who acts against us is of course a </span><em>hostis  &#8211; </em><span style="font-style:normal;">which is why we deport them. We do not, however, deport &#8216;our own&#8217;.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">But I might ask, why why we extend our mercy and punishing foreigners, if not for the goal of retaining them as citizens and integrating them? But why then do we at the same time deport them after they have completed their sentences?</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">I would suggest choosing e</span><em><span style="text-decoration:none;">ither </span></em><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:none;">banishment </span></span><em><span style="text-decoration:none;">or </span></em><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:none;">punishment. </span></span><em><span style="text-decoration:none;">Either, </span></em><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:none;">our policy is to try to keep them here, among us, integrating them in society; </span></span><em><span style="text-decoration:none;">or </span></em><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:none;">it is our policy to rid ourselves of hostile aliens by deporting them.</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;"><span style="text-decoration:none;">I am divided on the issue myself. We have these two options – one more idealistic, the other more cynical, and they appear to be equally reasonable. If someone poses a threat to society and is a foreign element, we have no obligation not to rid ourselves of that threat and burden – On the other hand, we could mercifully suffer them to stay, but after paying off their debt to society. I would somehow be impressed with the man who would choose years of imprisonment rather than face expulsion from his adopted home. It asks the question – Friend or foe?</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-style:normal;">* Schmitt adds, in a note, the following citation from Poponius: </span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Den hvide idé &#8211; for nu at omtale monarkismen efter russisk forbillede &#8211; spiller en central rolle i nationalkonservativ tænkning, som man finder det i Konservativ Ungdom. Vores kongstanke, vores tyrkertro på monarkiets betydning og fremhævelse af det politiske potentiale beliggende i den før så mægtige institution, kan virke virkelighedsfjern, ja endda morsom for den udenforstående, men der ligger alvor bag.</p>
<p>Jeg har for noget tid siden læst den udmærkede bog <em>Blot til pynt</em> af Claus Bjørn, der kommer med et bud på den borgerlige opfattelse af monarkiet, som jeg og nok mange andre kan nikke genkendende til. Han skriver (i parafrase af Flemming Hvidbergs indlæg i bogen <em>Til alle mænds tarv</em>, udgivet af Konservative Folkeparti i 1956:</p>
<blockquote><p>Netop i kraft af sin kontinuitet, sin afsondrethed fra dagens liv og sin retslige og sociale særstilling kan kongemagten udtrykke det blivende og det, der eksisterer oven over og ud over den daglige partipolitiks bøvl og befolkningsgruppers indbrydes strid om fordelingen af den fælles kage. Kongemagten er i kraft af sin særlige stilling alt det, folkestyret aldrig kan være, og netop derfor det, folkestyret behøver for at blive et med alt det, der rummes i selve begrebet om en nation.<span id="more-118"></span></p></blockquote>
<p>Som Hvidberg udtrykker det, giver monarkiet &#8220;nationen fasthed og styrke og højhed&#8221;. Heri kan jeg kun erklære mig enig. Kong Christian d. 10s optræden under den tyske besættelse er næsten det stærkeste ekesmepl, man kan komme på.</p>
<p>Samtidigt ønskes der &#8211; ønsker vi &#8211; en værdig, evig og ophøjet modvægt til banale og overfolkelige politikeres vulgaritet. Dette er både et politisk og et æstetisk faktum. Kongehusets særlige æstetik &#8211; dets protokol, dets prædikater, dets formelle stilling &#8211; skattes i lige så høj grad som det politiske, og de to står i et klart forhold til hinanden. Når jeg finder det eksempelvis voldsomt upassende, at ministre og andre udtaler sig om, hvad Kronprins Frederik må og ikke må.</p>
<p>Etiketten byder, at ministrene er Kongehusets tjenere på linie med alle andre embedsmænd. Politisk agererer de frit; de kommer med hvilken som helst indstilling til regenten, der ønsker det samme &#8211; <em>wishes it so &#8211; </em>der ved sin samtykke lader det i træde i kraft. Dette er i dag en formalitet &#8211; men ikke desto mindre en betydningsfuld formalitet. Det påminder ministrene og andre om, at de svarer for nogen. For fortiden og fremtiden, i nogen grad, for hvor politikere kommer og går, består monarken.</p>
<p>Samtidigt er forholdet til Kongehuset en metafor for forholdet til fortiden og til det givne. Når en minister tærder til og møder regenten i audiens, møder han samtidigt Rigets oprindelige lederskab i moderne skikkelse: Enevældskongens arvtager og den fyrste, hvis forgængere altid har ledet de danske (og andre). Accepteres det &#8211; accepterer man nedarvet privilegium, ophøjethed og overhøjheden &#8211; alt dette som skabte Danmark og som u-undskyldt ligger uden for den demokratiske lighedstanke &#8211; eller forkaster man autoriteten og Danmark med den?</p>
<p>Den konservative siger nej. Når man ærer, respekterer og &#8211; i sidste ende &#8211; aflyder regenten, er det dels ud fra et klassisk, enkelt personlgit troskabsforhold, som man konservative føler. På den anden side er det i det daglige politiske virke og i samfundstænkningen også en måde at vise, at der stadigt findes ærværdighed her i landet. Vores ærbødighed skal minde om ærværdighedens fortsatte eksistens, selvom det kan være svært at acceptere for den liberale, at der er forskel på graden af ærbødighed, der afkræves individet. Det mener vi jo bestemt, der er. Således er den monarkistiske æstetik &#8211; vores insisteren på at udvise ærbødighed &#8211; en opretholdelse af det bagvedliggende princip om hierarki og respekt for det af fortiden givne, som er så central.</p>
<p>Når vi samtidigt fremhæver det politiske magt iboende i Kongehuset, har det t gøre med vores lede over for nutidens politikere og ønsket om en modpol til de overdreven liberale og Rousseau&#8217;ske tanker, der hersker i samfundslivet idag. Der er også et ønske om at opretholde monarkiet &#8211; som er et formål i sig selv, i og med at det er en metonym for at bevare nationen &#8211; ved at sikre det fra ligegyldigheden. Vi ser det gerne træde i karakter, således at man kan mindes dets overhøjhed over politikerne.</p>
<p>Respekten for monarkiet beror også på dets stilling som &#8220;den anden magt.&#8221; &#8211; Den magt, der træder i stedet, når politikerne (uvægerligt) fejler. Her ser vi på eksmepler fra udlandet &#8211; Kong Juan Carlos af Spanien, der afværgede et militærkup; den kongelige generalguvernør af Australien, der løste en forfatningskrise i 70erne og mange andre tilfælde. Kongehuset er en plan B, og en plan B, som vi med jævne mellemrum børster af og ser nærmere på, for også at demonstrere vores manglende barnligt idealistisk tiltro til folketyre.</p>
<p>En sådan demokratisme er bedre beskrevet andetsteds, men monarkismen er det nødvendige korrektiv.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Men hvad var nu det for noget? Som et hvert oplyst menneske, velsagtens et Politiken, Information eller Ekstra Bladet læsende et, véd, så er det naturlige svar på en spørgsmål rettet til en selv, hvor vort gode, jævne danske </span><em>du </em><span style="font-style:normal;">på formasteligt vis er blevet erstattet af det forhistoriske lævn til </span><em>De</em><span style="font-style:normal;">, et højt, forvirret og med vestegnsaccent udtalt [væ:m]?</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Ja, det er jo lidt forvirrende, for man hører ikke det store bogstav! En lille krølle på hale var oldtidens mennesker tilsyneladende ikke for fine til &#8211; blot kan arkæologerne og antikvaristerne undres over, hvordan skellet </span><em>de/De </em><span style="font-style:normal;">fremgik af runeskriften; </span><em>De</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> stammer vel antageligvis fra sådanne tider før ipoden og kildeskatten, hvor man ristede den slags i sten. I dag er det eneste, et oplyst menneske ridser i sine omgivelser, diverse kønsorganer, hjerter med indskrifter som ”Kristina+ Oliver 4 ever”. Det ved enhver da! </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Suk. I virkeligheden er det jo dybt, dybt sørgeligt, som tiltale er gået til i dag (og runeskriften, som er en vigtig del af vores ligedeles vigtige kulturarv, men det er en helt anden sag). Jeg har altid anset skellet mellem </span><em>du</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> og </span><em>De</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> for særdeles nyttigt og som noget, der snarere end at hæmme eller begrænse omgangen mellem mennesker – især mennesker af, hvordan kan man sige i 2008? &#8211; forskellig baggrund. Som jeg ser det, signalerer frafaldet af </span><em>De </em><span style="font-style:normal;">ikke et samfunds uundgåelige fremskridt imod civilisation, egalitarisme og ligeværd mellem alle borgere, men noget helt andet. Det er for mig en kulturel </span><em>degeneration</em><span style="font-style:normal;">, en reel devolution fra det mere komplekse, men også mere nuancerede og et skridt nærmere det rene barbari. Jeg benytter ordet ”barbari” ganske specifikt for at henlede mine kære læseres tanker imod hærgende horder af hunnere og deslige, som i deres barbari netop ikke respekterer det uendeligt vigtige princip her i livet – grænsedragning. Grænsen mellem mit og dit, mellem hvad man må og hvad man ikke må og ikke mindst, grænsen mellem det offentlige liv og intimsfære, som måske frem for alt* er blevet undergravet. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Den eksklusive – nej, </span><em>udelukkende </em><span style="font-style:normal;">(for synderligt ”eksklusiv” er den ikke) brug af det uformelle, intime pronomen </span><em>du</em><span style="font-style:normal;"> har i sin rod i en antiautoritær ånd, som jeg også gerne vil tage afstand fra. Tanken om, at der ikke skulle gives autoriteter i samfundet er enten falsk eller farlig – oftest begge i forsøget på at overvinde gabet imellem den antiautoritæres erfarede og ønskede realitet. Det betyder manglende tillid til dommere og til det juridiske system; manglende tillid til politikerne, manglende kontrol over skolevæsenet og så videre &#8211; med katastrofale omkostninger, vi betaler med vor stigende analfabetisme, arbejdsløshed, apati og anarki i gaderne. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;font-style:normal;"><span style="font-size:x-small;">Men lad os ikke dvæle unødigt ved det politiske. Dette handler om den daglige omgang mellem mennesker. Når man ikke har mulighed for at tiltale nogen på en anden måde end man ville en barndomsven, et familiemedlem eller kæreste, kommer man enten til at forklejne intimiteten og nærheden i disse forhold – eller, på slibrigt, upassende og indsmigrende vis, at foregive den i sammenhænge, hvor social nærhed enten ikke findes eller ikke ønskes. Jeg ved ikke, hvad der er værre: At lege dus med en dommer i retten, hvad der burde være som at lege med ilden, eller at være Des med sine nærmeste? </span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Jeg stod selv i problemet for et par år siden, da jeg skulle skrive til kulturministeren. ”Hej Brian” gik bare ikke. Det kan sagtens være, han intet problem har med det personligt, men for </span><em>mig </em><span style="font-style:normal;">ville det føles upassende. Jeg kender faktisk overhoved ikke kulturministeren eller nogen anden minister for den sags skyld, og jeg kendte ikke kotymen.</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;font-style:normal;"><span style="font-size:x-small;"><span style="font-style:normal;">Jeg bryder mig ikke om at forestille – prætendere – at der er en personlig relation, hvor der ikke findes en. Det er den ultimative prætension og langt værre end det efterhånden prætentiøse ry og indtryk, man straks opnår med pronominet. Det er det samme med rangklasserne. Hvem ved i dag, at  ambassadører, præsidenten for Højesteret, storkommandører af Dannebrog, riddere af Elefantordenen og flere andre har det privilegium ikke blot at have et prædikat, men prædikatet</span><em> Ekscellence? </em><span style="font-style:normal;">Det smager som noget fra en svunden tid – men hvorfor er det det? Har vi i dag mindre behov for at anerkende fortjeneste, rang eller værdighed? Sådan som jeg ser det er omvendt; vi har brug for langt mere respekt. Der er ikke brug for smiger eller prætension, men for reel anerkendelse. Så lad os i det mindste være Des – så kan vi tale om ordner, når først vi har en ordentlig omgangstone.</span></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>As I sit and ponder life over a cup of chamomile tea, I have taken the time to consider the question of <em>feminine titles. <span id="more-112"></span></em>Of course, I&#8217;m not thinking of <em>Bridget Jones&#8217; Diary, </em>but rather, feminine versions of titles such as chancellor, spokesman and chairman. In Danish, that&#8217;d be <em>kansler</em>, <em>ordfører</em> and <em>formand. </em></p>
<p>Yesterday, I was helping Thorkil Værge, my good friend, proofread a blog post that mentioned a certain Inger Sjørslev, who is the chief political spokesman for the Liberal Party &#8211; referred to as <em>Venstres politiske ordfører. </em>As a little joke, I &#8216;feminized&#8217; the title to <em>ordførerinde</em>. Not exactly the most common femine form in Danish, but consistent with other feminine forms like <em>lærerinde </em>(teacher-ess). Thorkil said it sounded chauvinist and would distract the reader from the main point in the article. I laughed and agreed, but when you think about it, it&#8217;s odd. Why on Earth is it impolite to use the feminine form of a term when referring to someone who is, without a doubt, female? Is it unfair to the fairer sex?</p>
<p>Some women vehemently oppose being referred to as &#8220;chairmen&#8221;, &#8220;firemen&#8221; or other male terms. Even in Danish, we have our <em>forkvinder </em>and <em>talskvinder: </em>chair-women and spokes-women. Why it&#8217;s OK to mangle a perfectly good word by replacing the <em>-mand</em> / &#8211; man with <em>-kvinde </em>/ -woman, and condescending to use the proper feminine suffixes <em>-inde</em>, <em>-ske</em> and <em>-ice</em>, I will never understand. Perhaps I refuse to understand it (, miss. ). Mangling a word by replacing &#8220;man&#8221; with &#8220;woman&#8221; is almost as bad as slapping on &#8220;woman&#8221; in front of titles &#8211; &#8220;woman doctor&#8221;, &#8220;woman teacher&#8221;, which I&#8217;ve always considered rather crude in English.</p>
<p>In Danish, it gets even sillier. &#8220;Nurse&#8221; and &#8220;assistant nurse&#8221; are differentiated by the presence (&#8221;Nurse-ess&#8221; &#8211; <em>sygeplejer<strong>ske</strong></em>) or absence (&#8221;nurse&#8221; &#8211; <em>sygeplejer</em>) of a feminine suffix. If all non-physicians with a number of years of post-secondary schooling in health services who assisted (female) nurses were male, that&#8217;d be fine.. but as it is now, it&#8217;s ridiculous.</p>
<p>Back to the term &#8220;chancellor&#8221;.</p>
<p>In the case of Dr. Angela Merkel, a powerful and respected woman, who happens to hold the federal chancellorship of Germany, an unnecessary confusion seems to haunt the editors of our great Kingdom&#8217;s newspapers. If we take a peak south of the border to Germany, it&#8217;s simple: Her title is simply &#8220;chancelloress&#8221; &#8211; <em>Kanzerl<strong>in. </strong></em>She is a woman and one refers to women with not only the proper pronoun* but also with the whatever form of address to which they may be entitled. In Danish, this too should be the case. She should be referred to as <em>kanslerinde.</em> It&#8217;s both easy to say and quite elegant.</p>
<p>Ease and elegance, Madam Woman Chairperson &#8211; who can object?</p>
<p>*Note my skillful, yet controversial use of &#8220;she&#8221; and &#8220;her&#8221;</p>

It&#8217;s the eternal problem with business-to-business (b2b) jobs; you <em>always </em>spend more than half your actual time on the phone negotiating with receptionists, dialling your way through phone menu&#8230; (why isn&#8217;t there ever a &#8220;&#8230; dial 7 if you&#8217;re a market researcher trying to find an able and willing respondent&#8230;&#8221;?) and being told that the head of Marketing / Sales / Human Ressources / etc.. isn&#8217;t available till next week. However, surprisingly, companies will tell you  a lot if you just ask persistently and politely. </p>
<p>Gave up on market survey by interviewing; sales figures simply aren&#8217;t accessible that way. Mini-qualitative investigation didn&#8217;t yield other than expected results based on websurvey findings. Well, it&#8217;s interesting anyway&#8230; I do need to practice doing qualitative interviews some more though. They&#8217;re supposed to be my forte as an anthropologist(-in-the-making).</p>

It&#8217;s quite a mouthful, but I&#8217;ve been dying to get out and do something with my studies. &#8230; Oh, and the pay is better., and I&#8217;m no longer working nights and weekends.</p>
<p>I called and quit at Nielsen Company this evening, and I&#8217;ll be going in Thursday to say goodbye and see if I can get my reference, otherwise they&#8217;ll just mail it to me. I&#8217;ve been there two years, learned a lot, but it&#8217;s was definitely time to move on.  It just wasn&#8217;t going anywhere. I&#8217;ve tried moving on and upwards twice in Nielsen, but to no avail. Last year, I contacted the Qualitative Research dept., since I was considering applying for an internship there. I exchanged some emails, had an interview with them&#8230; and then never heard a thing. This year, I applied for a job as a qualitative project assistant &#8230; but I haven&#8217;t heard a thing either. So I started looking elsewhere, and got it. Bu-bye Nielsen. There really isn&#8217;t all that much to say.</p>
<p>Except hurray! I have a real job!</p>
