Last Week: Knudepunkt, A Week in Denmark
It’s now been a few days since this year’s Knudepunkt ended, after the famous AWiD. Really, this is one of the highlights of my year. Knudepunkt is many things, but at is core it’s a pan-Nordic larp convention. It emphasizes larp theory, the avantgarde and arthouse larps, but it is so much more than this. It’s also a week long visit (since 2003) to the host-country in the homes of local participants, a series of books and a fantastic forum for exchanging ideas, thoughts, meeting new people and being inspired.
Let’s review: Last week, I had my two good friends, Sofia from Sweden and Britta from Norway, and my new, also good friend Amir from Israel visiting for a week – we partied, talked, went to larps and hung around with people from … I think.. 13 countries. I’ve met tons of new people (special thanks to the Israeli delegation, you were a blast), and gotten to know people, I otherwise never would have met.
An example: Johan Söderberg, Swedish sociologist and structural-marxist. Not exactly the sort of people you meet at a CEPOS lunch symposium and that’s exactly the point. While one might expect me to go into a propaganda-rant at this moment about Marxism, I can to contrary report having some very amicable discussions with Mr. (soon to be Dr.) Söderberg. We share a distaste for labor unions, social liberals and an interest in radical critique of society as it is today. For totally, utterly different reasons, but the similarity was there. It would seem that the outer points of the political specter to meet.
What else happened? Of course, there’s too much to tell. I got sick and I haven’t gotten over it yet; despite that, I was able to give my lecture ‘Studying Larps – or “Larpography”‘ – a brief review of other larp researchers’ methods and an introduction to ethnography and its application to larp.
Well, as I said – there’s too much to tell. Let me just extend my gratitude to Tobias Harding, Johan Söderberg, J. Tuomas Harviainen, Sofia Nordin, Britta Bergersern, Amir Amad, Itamar (never got your last name) and of course, the entire KP-organizer team (of which I regretably haven’t been a part these last couple of months).
